Happy 100 Year Anniversary Eagle Scouts!

Eagle Scout Honor Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary

On September 2, 1912 Arthur Rose Eldred was awarded his Eagle Scout medal.  Because scouting was still in its infancy in the United States, he did not have some of the steps that Eagle Scouts today have to undergo, such as earning the Life or Star awards.  In fact, he did not have a troop board of review (a review by the adult leaders of the troop to review his eligibility).  Instead, this pioneering scout had a thorough National Board of Review consisting of Chief Scout Executive James E. West, Chief Scout Ernest Thompson Seton, National Scout Commissioner Daniel Carter Beard, and Wilbert E. Longfellow, who had written articles on life-saving and swimming in the Handbook for Boys.

Arthur Rose Eldred in 1912, shortly after receiving the Eagle award and his Bronze Honor medal for saving a life.

Though he was informed by letter that on August 21, 1912 that he had earned this honor that would one day be synonymous with the very best and finest young men in scouting, the medal itself had not yet been finished.  Thus, he received the medal on September 2, 1912.

While we often see Boy Scouts within our communities, I think sometimes we don't realize just how powerful this program can be nor fully appreciate its benefits for the young men who join.  Baylor University conducted a study of the impact of the scouting program on its Eagle Scouts and its findings are striking.  An Eagle Scout is more likely to be a confident, devoted to his family and country, generous, and a community leader.  You can find the complete study here: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/210-045_WB.pdf.  It is a good read!

Great Lakes Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is proud to number among our store leaders our very own Eagle Scout:  Josh Wessell.
Among his achievements in attaining the level of Eagle Scout, Josh rebuilt the miniature building used by Rock Creek, Ohio's Safety Town Program that teaches area youth about community safety.

The entire Great Lakes Auto Network wishes to congratulate all our area Eagle Scouts, both past and present!  You can find a scouting program in our area by using this link:  https://beascout.scouting.org/.
